May 21, 2017 - Cannes Film Day 5

And so it was said: Sunday is the day of rest, even during the Cannes Film Festival.

No, the Festival itself hadn't taken a break.  But I did.  I finally caught up my much-needed sleep and stayed in Juan-les-Pins until around noon.  But then the work began.

See, Dr. Kohn is a powerful man.  He has connections.  How do you think we all even got to come to Cannes in the first place?  (I think it's like, some form of the film festival mafia.  No, seriously.)  But given these connections, one of them just happens to be director, writer, and actor John Cameron Mitchell.

JCM, as we all call him now (although sometimes we call him John), has been in the business for decades.  His most well-known work is probably Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which was first a rock musical, and then a movie made at the turn of the century.  It's about a rocker who, while not necessarily identifying as transgender, did undergo transitional surgery in order to become a woman and escape East Berlin.

Relatable, right?

Anyways, JCM was at it again, invited to Cannes with his newest film How to Talk to Girls at Parties, based on a short story by Neil Gaiman.

So, basically, this film is two of my favorite idols coming together to make an awesome movie about punk rockers and aliens.

My mind was melting before we even started begging for tickets.

Begging, yes.  Because, while Kohn does have connections with JCM, we couldn't get premiere tickets out of it.  Instead, we had tickets to the afterparty.  (And let's be real, the afterparty is kind of better.)

But we weren't going to go to an afterparty for a movie we hadn't seen!  What kind of film students would we be to lose that kind of networking context?

Nevertheless, we got the tickets.  And furthermore, we got to see JCM, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and Sandy Powell on the red carpet all together.  Also, ignore all the reviews about How to Talk to Girls, because it was an awesome film.

But before we could go to the party, we had four hours to kill.  So, having only seen one film so far in the day, we decided to go watch The Meyerowitz Stories (New & Selected), a film by Noah Baumbauch, who also wrote many film with Wes Anderson, and starring Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler.

The Meyerowitz Stories was lowkey a mess, which isn't to say that it was bad, just that it wasn't good.  But it's a Netflix film, and it allowed us to be fashionably late to the afterparty, so maybe it was a win?

Either way, the afterparty.  So amazing.  So punk.  Elle Fanning was less than two feet away from me.  It was a blast.
